Getting Started with Your New Website
What You Need to Do
What do you need to do to get your business online?
Planning your Website's Content
Get out a piece of paper and a pen and jot down all the features you want to have on your new website.
A good way to start is to draw a "site map". This is simply a list of pages you want your website to have (such as a home page, an about us page, a services or products page, contact form, etc).
Large websites are more complex and will likely require a a flowchart showing all the pages and sub-pages and how each of the website's pages should link to each other.
Look and Feel of Your Website
Have a look around the internet and write down a list of sites you like and what it is that you like about them. For example, you might like a website's navigation menu, or the colours, look and feel of a site.
Don't forget to write a list of sites and features you do not like. This will help your website designer know what things to avoid.
Taking the time to do this may save considerable time, money and frustration when getting your website designed.
Content for Your Website
The content of your website is important not only for your website's visitors, but also to search engines.
The content of your website should be easy to read, easy to find, and persuade your website's visitors to act! You might want them to contact you, place an order, register on-line, make a booking....
Writing for the Web very different to writing for printed matter. Internet users tend to scan content on the web hunting for the information they are seeking rather than reading word-for-word. As a result of this, there are certain guidelines you should be sure to follow when writing content for your website:
- use clear, simple language with no unnecessary words
- keep paragraphs brief and limit each paragraph to one idea
- put your conclusion (or main point) first
- use lists wherever possible
- use description headings and sub-headings
To help us help you, please provide us with as much written content as possible. Write or collect as much information about your business, products and/or services as you possibly can. The more content you can provide the better it will be for us to pull it all together into an effective and informative website.
Your business flyers, advertisements, business card, or any other marketing material you currently use will also be of use to us … please provide us with as much as you can.
Don't be too worried about getting it right first time. Once we have your content our website developers will make adjustments to your website's content to ensure it works for you.
Images and Photos for Your Website
Please provide any good quality photos or images you currently use to market your business. A high quality image of your company's logo is also required. Don't worry about file or image sizes — we will crop or reduce them, as well as optimise them for use on your website.
Unable to provide any images? No problem! We can source high quality generic photos for you (at a small additional cost).
